The Fatah party squeaked out a narrow victory over the rival Hamas terrorist party in elections at the Hevron University Wednesday. The Fatah party, which is led by Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas, won 21 seats, compared with 20 for Hamas.
The victory gave Fatah its first majority since 1986. Last month, Fatah also won elections at Bir Zeit University near Ramallah. However, polls show that Hamas is stronger than it was several months ago. Earlier this week, Hamas rejected a call by Abbas for early elections.
