Car Thieves 'Test Drive' Their Way to Prison

(IsraelNN.com) Two Arab car thieves from the Arab town of Tira ended up getting a free ride – to jail – after they hit upon a novel way to steal a vehicle. On Thursday, the Arabs – one of whom had a phony Israeli ID card listing his address as being in Rishon LeTzion – entered a Tel Aviv Merecedes Benz dealership and asked to take a car out for a test drive. The pair left after leaving the phony ID card with the salesperson as a deposit, as is customary in Israel.

But the 'customers' failed to return after several hours, and the salesperson set off the car's GPS-based alarm and identification system, which apparently the Arabs didn't know was a feature of the top of the line model they had stolen. The GPS system located them in Tira, about 40 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. Officers from the local police station arrested them, as well as the driver of a second car who was behaving suspiciously.
