ADL Rejects Call for Jewish Boycott of Olympics

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has rejected a call by 185 Jewish leaders for a Jewish boycott of the Summer Olympics in Beijing because of China's support of the terrorist regime in Sudan and repression in Tibet. The leaders, from all streams of Judaism, also compared  China's hosting the Beijing Games with the 1936 games in Germany, which Nazi leaders used as a public relations effort to support its regime.

"The ADL said that despite China's poor record on human rights, boycotting the games "could be counterproductive and would not produce any tangible result." The campaign effort for the boycott was directed at Jewish tourists and not athletes or governments, and leaders stated they were not equating the Chinese government with Nazism. However, the ADL rejected comparisons as "appropriate."
