For the first time since the bombing of a suspected Syrian nuclear installation seven months ago, the United States has confirmed that it was Israel that carried out the strike. "Last September, Israel did indeed bomb a nuclear reactor in northern Syria that was not intended for peace," a White House statement said.
The statement added that the bombing caused irreparable damage to the reactor.
Sources in Jerusalem voiced concern Friday that the leak of information about the attack to the media could cause tension between Israel and Syria. MK Yuval Steinitz (Likud) told IDF Radio: "I do not understand how such sensitive details are leaked from the closed door session in the American Congress." Israel, he added, should have prevented this "intelligence damage."
