Aussie World War II Vets Headed for Israel

Seven World War II veterans from Australia are planning to visit Israel to attend a ceremony next Monday, dedicating a memorial to the Australian Light Horse Brigade, which fought in a battle in Be'er Sheva in World War I. The dedication of The Park of the Australian Soldier will be attended by President Shimon Peres and Australian Governor-General Maj.-Gen. Michael Jeffery, the first Australian head of state to visit Israel.

All of the veterans are in their 80s, and none of the First World War veterans are living except for a 109-year-old man who worked in the telegraph office in Australia and did not fight in the battle. Their visit will begin on Anzac Day with a dawn service at the Mount Scopus Commonwealth War Cemetery in Jerusalem.
