Kibbutzim (cooperative communities) located near the Gaza border are considering switching the types of crops they grow in order to reduce security costs, according to Haaretz. The kibbutzim currently grow potatoes, carrots, and peanuts—all crops that require a significant amount of labor.
Every time workers need to tend to the crops, they have to coordinate with the IDF, which attempts to protect them from terrorist snipers in nearby Gaza, kibbutz workers said. The need for increased security ups costs by approximately 40 percent and lowers productivity, they said.
