Details of Nahal Oz Attack Show Imperfect IDF Response

An initial IDF inquiry into the deadly attack on the Nahal Oz fuel depot on Wednesday has revealed flaws in the way some of the forces were deployed during the attack.

The four terrorists ran more than 200 meters across an open area west of the fence but nobody on the Israeli side noticed them, possibly because of the covering mortar shell barrage that was fired at the depot simultaneously. A few shells landed in a Givati Regiment outpost a few hundred meters south of the gas depot. The Arab attackers cut the border fence and passed into the Israeli side, and two of them climbed over the wall surrounding the depot while the other two waited behind the wall with RPG rockets.

The IDF received its first warning of the raid only from the electronic fence. Two of the terrorists fired RPG rockets at the soldiers who arrived on the scene, but missed. The four cell members began fleeing toward Gaza, but shortly after crossing the fence two of them were hit - one by tank fire and the other by Givati soldiers giving chase.
