Extremist groups in Gaza continue to attack businesses owned by local Arabs that they see as unfitting for Muslim society, Gaza sources told the Maan news agency on Thursday. Anonymous attackers destroyed a woman’s hair salon in Gaza City on Wednesday night, they said.
The hair salon had been attacked previously, but was reopened. This time it was completely demolished, and nearby press offices suffered temporary network outages as well.
New groups that sprung up in Gaza since the Hamas takeover in the area have attacked dozens of Internet cafes, music stores, pharmacies, and coffee shops in recent months, causing extensive damage. Extremists also destroyed the YMCA library in Gaza and attacked a United Nations school last year for holding an event at which young boys and girls interacted. Women’s groups in Gaza say the groups have begun murdering women suspected of violating Muslim precepts as well, a practice the extremists term “honor killing.”
