Defense industry company Elbit Systems's Electo-Optics division, Elop, has won a multi-year contract from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company to supply new generation Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) for the new F-16 aircraft. The first order for the HUDs will cost Lockheed $3.8 million.
Heads-Up Displays are any transparent displays that present data without obstructing the user's view. Although they were initially developed for military aviation, HUDs are now used in commercial aircraft, automobiles, and other applications, such as video games.
Elop has already manufactured 13 different models of HUD, used on more than 20 aircraft types around the world.
Elbit's US subsidiary has been divided into seven specialized units located in Texas, Alabama, Florida, and New Hampshire. This latest contract is part of a growing cooperative relationship between Elbit Systems and Lockheed Martin.
