Egyptian officials quoted in a report published Sunday by the Al-Ahram newspaper said security officials intercepted two car bombs intended for popular tourist destinations in the Sinai Peninsula. According to the report, Egyptian and Sudanese terrorists were planning the attack. A second car bomb was subsequently discovered early Sunday in a car driven by two Sudanese nationals; Egyptian police are interrogating the terrorists at this hour.
The number of terrorists who infiltrated into Sinai in recent months increased significantly following the breach of Egypt’s border with Gaza by Hamas terrorists who blew up the barrier in January. Israeli intelligence officials estimated that at least two thousand Hamas and other terrorists melted away into the Sinai Peninsula during the three-week period it took Egypt to reseal the border.
