Six men facing up to 70 years in prison if convicted on charges of conspiring to blow up the Chicago Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices in March 2006 are waiting it out as a jury in its third day of deliberations ponders whether it is a crime to swear an oath to the international al-Qaeda terrorist organization.
The prosecutor argues it is a crime to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization. Defense lawyers said it is not a crime to swear an oath to an organization, even al-Qaeda. The six men were videotaped by an undercover FBI agent who they thought was a terrorist as they swore the oath.
