Members of the New Sanhedrin have issued a statement accusing the General Security Services (Shabak) of political agitation for its self-reported in-depth investigations into the possibility of revenge attacks on Arabs following a recent terrorist attack in the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem. “Why are the Shabak members more concerned today than in the many previous terrorist murders?” the group asked.
The court suggested that the Shabak was attempting to stir up political turmoil, “as in the days when the Rabin libel was concocted, ending in his unsolved murder.” The group referred to the findings of the Shamgar Commission, which reported that the Shabak had created provocations by hanging up posters of Rabin dressed as a Nazi officer, and suggested that attempts to portray yeshiva students as seeking revenge were part of a similar plot.
