Prisoner Shlomi Dvir was reprimanded on Thursday for giving an interview to Channel 2 News Wednesday. Dvir is serving a 15-year sentence for attempting a bomb attack on a Muslim girls’ school in eastern Jerusalem. He was sentenced to a reprimand, which relatives fear could negatively impact his conditions in prison.
In the interview, Dvir called on young friends of the eight students who were murdered in a shooting attack at the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem last week not to take revenge. Revenge “is a national task... of the state and the army,” he said. Private individuals should not attempt to take the task of avenging terror victims’ deaths upon themselves, he said, explaining, “The redemption will not come due to a few who race forward.”
Youths are “hot-blooded,” Dvir said, and might not understand that their actions would cause more harm than good. “If there really are people sitting and planning [an attack], it’s worthwhile for them to stop and think a bit and listen to someone with experience,” he added.
