Abbas Reports Cease-Fire Between Israel and Hamas
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas spoke with Jordanian King Abdullah on Monday and informed him that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire deal in Gaza via Egyptian mediation, according to el-Arabiyya. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have denied that such a deal exists.
Haaretz reported Monday that the four rocket-free days in Gaza came as a result of an unofficial cease-fire, saying the IDF has been warned to stand down. Hamas has said that Israel stopped operating in Gaza because the Jewish State realizes it can’t win. Some commentators saw the recent withdrawal as a response to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s sudden visit to the region.
Olmert said Monday night: "There is no cease-fire agreement; there are no negotiations, direct or indirect” but has repeatedly promised the Hamas, through the media, that should they stop firing rockets, Israel would stop operating in Gaza.
