In his first public statement since the terrorist attack in Jerusalem on Thursday evening, in which eight people were murdered in the library of Merkaz Harav Yeshiva, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Saturday night that there was a “direct connection” between Kassam attacks on the South and the attack Thursday night. “Both are designed to make our lives intolerable. In the same way that we have prevented attacks by Arab countries and Hizbullah, which has not dared to fire a missile at us for a year and a half, we will prevent attacks by terrorists,” he said.
Security forces across Israel were on the highest level of alert over the weekend. Police raised their alert to level 'C' immediately after the attack's dimensions became known, fearing that other attacks could be in the offing. A closure is currently in effect on Judea and Samaria and will last at least through Purim. However, exceptions will be for humanitarian and medical needs. Motorists were asked to remain patient at police checkpoints which will be set up at the entrance and exit of Jerusalem and other cities.
