A Kosher Deli That Stays Open on the Sabbath

A Chabad rabbi has won the cooperation of London's Bloom's Kosher Deli, which often is called the country's most famous restaurant, to open up the restaurant on the Sabbath in order to provide a place to accommodate many guests who come to Rabbi Levi Sudak's home. Guests at the Sudak home also felt uncomfortable because they had no room at their homes to invite the hosts, Yeshiva World News reported.

Restaurants open on the Sabbath usually cannot be certified kosher because it would violate the Sabbath to pay someone to supervise food operations on the day of rest. The restaurant agreed to let the Chabad rabbi open up the restaurant on a private basis, although tourists also are welcome. Payment for the meal is made before the beginning of the Sabbath.

"When Rabbi Sudak approached us, we couldn’t possibly refuse him. We know he does everything he can to help the community and we felt we ought to do the same," said Bloom's owner Mrs. Kitty Rudolph.
