The 1,000-strong Jewish community of Paraguay is in danger from a plague of yellow fever because of a shortage of vaccines, according to Chabad Rabbi Levi Fiegelstock. The government has declared a national emergency while waiting for shipments of vaccines from other countries.
The disease has claimed the lives of eight people in the country, none of them Jews. Rabbi Fiegelstock said he and his wife waited in line twice at the hospital to be vaccinated but that the supply had run out when their turn arrived.
