Rabbinic leaders of a group dedicated to promoting the sanctity of the Sabbath are preparing a protest campaign against the Dor-Alon Energy company, which plans to open more of its stores on the Sabbath. The Alon company operates Shefa Shuke and Blue Square markets as well as its gas stations and adjacent convenient stores, almost of which operate on the Sabbath.
Alon recently purchased AM/PM stores and plans to keep Tel Aviv area branches open on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays. The rabbis fear that competitors also will be forced to open their doors on the Sabbath in order to keep their customers.
