Egyptian intelligence chief Omer Suleiman will visit Israel next week to discuss an Egyptian plan to deal with the Gaza border. Suleiman will meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
The Egyptian plan calls to bring back European Union monitors and reopen the Rafiah border crossing. Israeli officials have expressed concern that the EU monitors will not be effective in preventing terrorist smuggling. EU observers monitored the crossing following the 2005 Israeli withdrawal from the area, but left in 2007 when Hamas took over Gaza.
