Abbas Pushes for More US Intervention

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas urged the United States to “play an active role” in negotiations between the PA and Israel during a press conference in Jordan on Monday.  If Israel and the PA do not reach a peace agreement in 2008, “there will never be any future chances to achieve this goal,” he said.

US, Israeli, and PA leaders initially called for a peace agreement in 2008, but many later said that the timetable was unrealistic, and that it would not be possible to reach an agreement within the year.  Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Abbas have agreed to skip the first steps of the Road Map in order to speed the process, and are holding “core issue” talks before dealing with more basic issues such as the status of Israeli cities in Judea and Samaria and the PA’s ability to fight terrorism.
