The National Insurance Institute published its annual poverty statistics for 2007 Thursday, indicating that there are currently 420,000 poor families in the country, comprising 1,674,800 people and 805,000 children.

Shas party leader Eli Yishai called on the government to reinstate child subsidies for poor families, asking "What will it take to convince those who need to understand about the pressing need for child subsidies?"
