Lebanese army soldiers have been deployed throughout Beirut, and security is heavy as Lebanon marks the anniversary of the death of anti-Syrian leader Rafik Hariri on the same day that Hizbullah buries terrorist Imad Mughniyeh. The coincidence of the two events comes after months of tension between pro and anti-Syrian parties, which has caused the worst political crisis in the country since the 15-year-long civil war from 1975-1980. Lebanon remains without a president while the government is paralyzed, unable to reach an agreement between the majority government and the minority of Hizbullah and pro-Syrian allies.
Prior to the car bombing death of Mughniyeh, hundreds of thousands of supporters were expected to attend a rally in memory of Hariri, a former Prime Minister who was outspoken in his opposition to Syrian dominance of the country. However, many said they would stay home because of fears of violence.
The funeral for Mughniyeh is scheduled for 2 p.m. (7 a.m. EST), and Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah will deliver a pre-recorded eulogy.
