Defense Minister Ehud Barak met the leaders of Israel's northernmost communities Wednesday and hinted that he opposed the plan to cancel tax benefits that the communities' residents currently enjoy.
"I've known many of you for a long time," he said. "You represent communities that were our backbone when we had to stand in the face of the fighting and now you are at the front of the periphery. We, as a government, must strengthen you," he said.
