Police have begun investigating the death of Gavriel Dwait, a young Ethiopian-Israeli man who went missing in 2005 and whose body was given to Israel as part of a deal with Hizbullah in 2007. Officials said that Dwait apparently drowned in northern Israel, after which his body was carried by tides to Lebanon, where it washed ashore and was seized by Hizbullah.
Dwait’s family members doubt the official version of events, and say documents retrieved from their son’s body were intact and showed no evidence of water damage. The documents would have been ruined if Dwait had indeed drowned, they say.
