Subsidized bread products again are scarce on the grocery shelves following another cutback by bakeries, which have demanded that the government raise the price on subsidized bread goods. The issue has lingered for several months, and Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Eli Yishai (Shas) previously removed the subsidies in return for the government's compensating low-income families. However, he then reversed his decision after it became apparent that the bakeries would raise prices more than he anticipated.
Bakeries have complained that the cost of flour and transportation has soared while the subsidy has not changed proportionately. The Ministry head by Yishai said it is trying to work out a new solution to the problem.
