Egypt plans to issue a tender in February for construction of its first nuclear power plant. Bids from all countries will be accepted, according to Abdel Mohsen Morsi Metwalli, director of nuclear engineering at Alexandria University, who was quoted by the state-run news agency.
The US $1.5-to-1.8-million project was announced by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak last year as a way to diversify the country’s energy resources.
