Asli Bayram, a 26-year old German Muslim of Turkish descent is playing the role of famous Jewish diary-keeper and Holocaust victim Anne Frank in Frankfurt.
Two years ago, Turkish-born Bayram became the first German beauty queen of Turkish origin. In a country not known for its acceptance of immigrants or foreigners, Bayram is a rare immigrant success story, having recovered from wounds suffered 12 years ago when she and her father were shot by a neo-Nazi neighbor, going on to study law, act in Istanbul and Vienna, and subsequently win the title of Miss Germany.
According to Bayram, she prepared for her role as the Jewish heroine by rereading the young girl's diary, visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, and studying the Holocaust in depth. She received a letter from Anne's cousin, Bernhard Elias, before her debut Monday, wishing her luck on her performance.
