The U.S. announced its intention to sell Saudi Arabia 900 JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munitions) laser-guided bombs. The report came as U.S. President George W. Bush visited Saudi Arabia.
The weapons turn regular bombs into "smart bombs" which are guided to their targets by a GPS system.
The U.S. has avoided selling these weapons to Saudi Arabia because of fear that the U.S. Congress would veto the sale. Israel has warned that if a fundamentalist rebellion takes place in Saudi Arabia, any technology it possesses could fall into the hands of terrorists.
