Shin Bet head Yuval Diskin said Monday that Hamas had managed to smuggle $100 million into Gaza in recent weeks. The funds were smuggled in along with hundreds of Muslim pilgrims returning from Mecca. Egypt allowed the pilgrims to enter Gaza via the Rafiah crossing without undergoing security checks, in violation of an agreement with Israel.
Diskin said that Palestinian Authority head Salam Fayyad has proposed that PA forces take control of Gaza crossings. Hamas has reportedly welcomed the proposal, while Israeli security officials have expressed reservations. Many members of the PA security forces are terrorists who agreed to join the forces in order to avoid being arrested or killed by the IDF.
