IDF May Equip Ground Troops With GPS

The Israel Defense Force is considering equipping combat soldiers with GPS (global positioning systems) devices indicating the location of other Israeli soldiers in the field.  The technology would enable commanders to keep tabs on the position of their troops, and would enable the Israel Air Force to prevent friendly-fire incidents when working in cooperation with ground forces in urban areas.

The IDF may purchase the technology from Petach Tikava-based ITL Optronics, a company which provides laser and electro-optic technology for the Infantry Corps. Currently in use by the IDF are the MARS scope for combat operators and the Cobra target-acquisition system for infantry units.

ITL is currently working on the development of a special laser system which would increase the likelihood of snipers hitting their targets on the first shot.
