Hundreds of people, including children, gathered outside the tomb of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein near Tikrit, north of Baghdad, to remember him on the first anniversary of his execution. Supporters chanted pro-Hussein slogans such as "with our blood, with our souls, we sacrifice for you Saddam," and tossed flowers. Speeches were also made, but little violence was recorded at the event.
Immediately following Hussein's execution by hanging on December 30, 2006, a huge swell of terrorism rocked Iraq, only being quelled six months later by an increase of US troops.
