(IsraelNN.com) Kfar Sava announced last week that it would join Tel Aviv and (so far) twelve other cities around the world for an hour of darkness, in which cities including Melbourne, Copenhagen, Toronto, Manila and Chicago, among others, would turn the power off for one hour on Thursday, March 27, to show support for efforts against global warming produced by the U.N. Conference on Global Warming in Bali earlier this month.

Under the program, all public electrical lights, such as streetlights, sidewalk poles, and so forth would be turned off for one hour. The idea, organizers of the project say, is to inspire citizens to turn off the lights in their homes when not necessary, and to join in what they hope will be a worldwide movement to save one hour of electricity used for lighting. Traffic lights, however, will continue to operate as usual, according to the plan.

“At the end of the workday, the lights and computers are left on in thousands of offices, wasting money and energy. This project will raise the consciousness of residents, reminding them that the environment can no longer handle this kind of waste,” said a Kfar Saba city official.
