(IsraelNN.com) After the successful entry of Britain's Thompson Air – famous for its $99 fares to the United Kingdom – into the Israeli market, another low-cost British carrier, RyanAir, is said to be seeking routes to Israel as well.

Unlike Thompson Air, however, the Irish airline flies to many destinations in Europe, with 516 routes across 26 countries. Thus, the addition of the low-cost airline to local travelers' airline options could enable Israelis to travel to many more spots in Europe for far less than they are paying now. RyanAir is said to be currently in discussions on the matter with Minister of Tourism Yitzchak Aharonovitch. Ministry officials said they were excited by the possibility of RyanAir opening up routes to and from Israel, since increased competition on Tel Aviv routes could lower prices by more than 30% in the coming years to reach a minimum of €150 for a round-trip between Europe and Israel.

Perhaps in anticipation of the new competition on its routes, British Airways this week added Israel to its list of “recommended destinations.” The airline no longer classes Israel as a war zone, and the Jewish state will now be the focus of a sales campaign in the United Kingdom. As a result, ticket prices between Israel and the United Kingdom on most BA flights will cost about £50 less.
