Local residents of central Oxford have expressed concern over the development of a "Muslim ghetto" in their area if Muslims are allowed to broadcast calls to prayer over loudspeakers. Dozens of people packed out a city council meeting to fight the two-minute long Arabic singing which would echo through the center of Oxford three times a day and drown out the traditional sound of church bells, calling the practice "un-neighborly."
Attendees said that Christian prayer broadcast publicly would not receive the same favorable consideration, and expressed disinterest in Oxford losing its multicultural flavor in favor of a more singularly Muslim one.
Representatives of the Central Mosque say Muslims have a right to summon worshippers. They invited residents of Oxford to come to the mosque to satisfy their concerns.
