(IsraelNN.com) In preparation for any impending war scenarios, Israel is purchasing at least 25 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters (JSF), which are capable of taking off and landing vertically.  Vertically-functioning aircraft are valuable in the event that Israeli bases and runways are targeted by enemy missiles.

The planes were initially scheduled for delivery in 2014, but plans have been pushed up in attempts to procure them by 2012.  Israel is in negotiations to install its own technology in the jets.

Eight countries currently own these state-of-the-art aircraft, including Turkey, Australia, and Britain.  Israel paid $20 million in 2003 to be privy to information regarding the jet as it was being developed.
