According to an Egyptian official quoted in the Jerusalem Post, Egypt has spent millions of dollars on an advanced American tunnel-detection system that will assist Egyptian security personnel in locating tunnels used to smuggle weapons and other contraband into Gaza.  The system was purchased with United States military aid, he said.

The official denied that Israeli pressure was involved in the decision, and said the issue of weapons smuggling between Egypt and Gaza is a matter of national security concern in Egypt.  “We have no interest in seeing a radical Muslim group with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt rise up along our border,” he explained, referring to Hamas, which controls Gaza.
