Northern District police are probably going to be blamed for the Peki'in riots that occurred in October, according to a report on IDF Army Radio Sunday morning. A female police officer was taken prisoner for a short time during the riots, according to local sources and a number of other officers and several rioters were injured.
The committee investigating the event has concluded that the police operation carried out in the mostly-Druze village of Peki'in to arrest vandals who destroyed a cell phone tower in nearby Peki'in Hadash was mishandled at top levels. The report stated the police officers were not provided with photos or maps of the village before going in, and were unfamiliar with the area. Nor were police commanders at the scene to provide leadership when the operation commenced.
Galilee Subdistrict Chief Lt.-Cmdr. Nir Mariash is to be named in the report, which is expected to be submitted to Police Chief Insp.Gen. David Cohen.
