IDF Removes Mezuzah From Hevron Casbah

A mezuzah affixed to the wall at the entrance to the Casbah in Hevron by a Judea Brigade rabbi on Monday has been removed, according to Ynet, and the event is under an IDF investigation.

"And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates," G-d commands the Jewish People in the Book of Deuteronomy, and in consonance with that directive, the IDF Judea Brigade Rabbi, Captain Eliyahu Peretz, affixed the mezuzah in a brief ceremony attended by IDF soldiers, Chabad-Lubavitcher Chassidim and members of the Hevron Jewish community.

The event raised a firestorm of protest from the far-left wing Peace Now organization, which complained bitterly that the IDF has become the "Settler Defense Forces." A statement from the organization said "the rabbi and the soldiers who participated in the illegal and political ceremony must be put on trial."

"This is a strictly Jewish place," said Yossi Nachson, a Chabad Chassid who was raised in nearby Kiryat Arba and participated in the ceremony. "We did nothing wrong."
