Polio victims born before the establishment of the State of Israel are not considered eligible by the National Insurance Institute (NII, or Bituach Leumi) to receive a one-time compensation grant after the Polio Law was passed in March 2007.
Thousands of Israelis who suffer with the disease have been approved to receive the money, which totals tens of thousands of shekels. However, because the law stipulates eligibility to mean "residents of Israel who contracted polio in Israel," the NII has chosen to exclude those who were born here before Israel won her independence in 1948.
