Sisters Find 2,000 Year Old Remains in Caesaria

Two sisters who were strolling along the beach in the ancient city of Caesaria looking for special stones and coins from the Roman era happened upon human remains believed to be 2,000 years old.  The spine and hip washed up on the shore near Kibbutz Barkai.

The sisters took the remains to the kibbutz nurse, then to the police, who sent the bones to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine at Abu Kabir for assessment. Though the examination isn't complete, Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) officials believe the bones date back to Roman times. This is not the first time human remains have been found by visitors to Caesaria. The IAA reports that bones are usually washed up after strong rains.

Caesaria was originally built by Herod in the first century BCE.
