A 12 year old bike rider was seriously injured Saturday night when he was hit by an Egged bus at the company's bus terminal at the entrance to the Har Nof neighborhood. A witness told Arutz 7 that the bus was empty at the time, and that the bike rider was “definitely in the field of vision of the driver.” It is not clear if the driver remained on the scene, the witness said.
The youth was taken to a local hospital after being treated at the scene by a local Hatzalah unit.
There have been a number of accidents involving pedestrians and empty Egged buses in recent years. In order to save money, the bus company contracts out the cleaning and maintenance of the buses to private companies, who supply drivers with a special license to transport the buses around town. However, these drivers are not necessarily professional bus drivers. Sources said that the company that handles the cleaning and maintenance contract in Jerusalem has a large number of Arabs working for it.
