Members of Shas announced Thursday that they have reached an agreement with the government that will grant an additional NIS 49 million to men’s institutions of higher Torah learning next year. The 2008 yeshiva budget will be NIS 700 million, as opposed to NIS 651 million in 2007, they said. A final agreement will be signed next week.
In addition, they said, each full-time Torah scholar will receive a one-time grant of between 110 and 150 shekels this month. Minister of Industry, Trade, and Labor Eli Yishai said the grant was particularly appropriate due to its proximity to Hanukka. In the days when the Greeks wanted to uproot Torah learning, he said, it is important to encourage Torah study. The grants, and the budget increase, will benefit all yeshivot.
