Several Arab organizations that oppose national service have accused the General Security Services (Shabak) of attempting to recruit Arab volunteers. GSS openly recruits volunteers to “a meaningful and challenging service... in a variety of positions.”
The organizations said earlier this week that the GSS volunteers prove that national service is not civilian service, but rather is connected to security services such as the GSS and IDF. They accused the GSS of attempting to recruit young Arabs, and called on Arab youth to avoid assisting Israel’s security organizations by avoiding national service completely.
Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office rejected the attempt to connect national service to the national defense forces. The GSS does not seek out Arab volunteers due to security concerns, they said.
