Donations by a wealthy British Jew to the Labour party, given secretly to prevent malicious talk about Jewish donations to political causes as part of a 'Jewish conspiracy' did not manage to prevent talk of such a Jewish plot, with discussions of the power of the pro-Israel lobby rising up in the United Kingdom. The contributions, given by UK millionaire David Abrahams, were illegal under British law, which requires campaign contributors to declare the amounts of their donations.
The donor says that he has been proven right to worry about his contribution being connected to his Jewishness and his connections to Israel – media have been playing up his position as the deputy chair of Labour Friends of Israel until 2002. The Labour Party's chief fundraiser is also Jewish, further adding fodder to anti-Semitic claims. Several media outlets are further connecting donations by Zionist Jews in Britain and what some insist was a pro-Israel policy of former prime minister Tony Blair.
The British Telegraph newspaper recently ran a photograph of Abrahams shaking hands with Israel's former ambassador to Britain, Zvi Heifetz, and insinuated that Israel was the source of the illegal campaign contributions. A recent UK poll revealed that 50 percent of respondents think British Jews are more loyal to Israel than to Britain.
