Maccabean-Style Coin Enters Into Circulation Today

Israel's new 2-shekel coin will be introduced into circulation Sunday, being used by Jews around Israel for the first time during this Chanukah season bearing symbols common to currency of the Maccabean era.

The coin, which will be larger than the one-shekel coin and smaller than the five-shekel coin, will feature two cornucopias with a pomegranate between them. The horns are filled with fruits and sheaves of wheat, and wrapped in ribbons.

The Bank of Israel believes that a two-shekel coin will make cash transactions easier by reducing the number of coins necessary.
