A Poughkeepsie, New York court Monday afternoon ruled in favor of Chabad and ordered municipal workers to erect a 22-foot menorah on the same corner it previously has stood. The city had objected to its workers setting up the menorah because it is on private grounds. Instead, it offered that its workers could erect the menorah next to a Christmas and Muslim display. Chabad objected that it was impossible to find private contractors at the last minute to do the job.
"I'm very, very happy,'' Chabad Rabbi Yaakov Borenstein told the Poughkeepsie Journal after the court session." Now I feel the holiday can really be expressed with religious freedom.''
However, the case is not closed, and both sides will meet in court next month to determine future policy.
