Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas wants Israel to return to the Egyptian-Gaza border to control smuggling of arms to Hamas, a Washington Post editorial stated Monday morning. Deputy editorial page editor Jackson Diehl wrote, "Abbas himself has told U.S. officials that Israel should retake control of the border between Egypt and Gaza to stop the smuggling."
Under the headline "Fuses in Gaza," Diehl said that the Bush administration is ignoring the likelihood of a war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. "The Katyushas, new to Gaza, are being saved for the all-out war for which both Hamas and the Israeli army are vigorously preparing," he wrote.
He noted that Israel has not invaded Gaza because constant Kassam rocket attacks have not yet hit a school or refinery.
