Study: Independent Kids Close With Parents

According to recent research conducted in Haifa University, young adults who maintain close ties with their parents are more likely to demonstrate independence in their personal lives.  Dr. Irit Yanir met with 300 participants to determine how relationships between parents and their 23-27 year old unmarried children were mirrored in the children’s personal lives.

Dr. Yanir found that children who talked frequently with their parents, met for family events, and shared their activities and feelings were more likely than others to be financially independent, have a strong sense of professional identity, and be in a serious romantic relationship.  The results were surprising, she said, and showed the importance of family ties beyond the teenage years.
