High Court President Dorit Beinisch met this week with American Ambassador to Israel Richard Jones and discussed several issues, including the separation barrier. The meeting was highly criticized by nationalist leaders as "gross intervention" by the High Court in political matters. The court and the Knesset have been at loggerheads over the court's rapidly expanding authority. Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann has drafted legislation that would curb the court's powers, which it unilaterally widened during the tenure of former court president Aharon Barak.
Justice Beinisch's office denied that she talked about political issues and added that she is authorized to meet with foreign officials.
