Rabbi Yosef Vows Shas To Quit Gov't If Jerusalem Splits

Shas party's spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef promised other leading rabbis Monday night that he would instruct the Shas party to quit the government if Prime Minister Ehud Olmert carries out his plan to divide the capital.

Rabbi Yosef hosted Old City Rabbi Avigdor Nebenzahl and Rehovot Rabbi Simcha HaCohen Kook at his home a day after Vice Prime Minister Chaim Ramon said that Rabbi Yosef considered his plan to cede most of eastern Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Rabbis Nebenzahl and Kook had asked the Shas spiritual leader to order the party to leave the government coalition immediately because of the Annapolis conference.
